On the 21st and 26th of May 2021, UTAC In collaboration with Smiles Africa, Akua Kids Foundation, Magho Foundation and Hope For That African Child collectively donated furniture and stationaries to two schools in North-East Region of Ghana precisely (Saosobigi M/A and Kukugbini Primary school).
This follows a video that went viral and reached the front desk UTAC through two teachers from Saosobigi and Kukugbini speaking of the studying conditions of children in their respective schools.
The video showed how children were sitting on the floor/ground to write even without proper school uniforms/sandals and without stationeries. Reports had it that these students were using one book for basically 5- 8 subjects with others without books at all.
These teachers pleaded for help for these children and UTAC as an organization which aim at fighting for quality Education in rural communities asked for more information about these schools and reached out to other sister organizations to come on board and support these children.
According to residents in Saosobigi, families gathered and went to the assemblyman to plead with him to take a step in supporting their children with chairs but yielded no results.
Samuel Mensah, who happens to be the Founder of UTAC interacted with some students and was told lack of furniture over time now has hindered their motivation both for coming to school and learning.
According to the Headmaster of Saosobigi M/A, for over 6 years the students have been without furniture and so extended sincere gratitude to the organizations for coming together to support schools in the north.
Samuel Kwame Mensah, the founder of UTA and initiator of this great move indicated that “This project has not ended as other schools are suffering from the same issue. I would like to use this opportunity to call on Ghana Education Service to make this a priority and support schools in need of furniture, books and proper structures to tighten the joy of studying among students.
He also urged the GES to support teachers who get posted to rural communities with the materials needed to teach these children as he believes these teachers will be more motivated when the teaching conditions are favorable.
Lastly, he thanked all sister organizations for joining hands to secure the success of this project.
