EXCLUSIVE: Afghanistan Must Not Come Again As A Sanctuary Of Terrorism-French’s Macron Speaks.
French President Emmanuel Macron said in a televised speech on Monday that Afghanistan should not become again the “sanctuary of #terrorism” that it was until the #US-led invasion two decades ago, after the Taliban regained control of the country.
The French president described the current situation as an “important challenge for our own security” and a “fight against a common enemy of terrorism”. “Our actions will above all be aimed at fighting actively against Islamist terrorism in all its forms,” he said.
Speaking of the ongoing evacuations, Macron emphasized the urgency of ensuring the safety not only of the French nationals still in Afghanistan, but also of the Afghans who worked with France, such as interpretors and embassy staff.
France, Germany and other EU countries would put together a response that was “robust, coordinated and united” to prevent “irregular migration” resulting from the crisis, Macron said.
“We must anticipate and protect ourselves against significant irregular migratory flows that would endanger the migrants and risk encouraging trafficking of all kinds.
