The Glittering Deception: Staying focused in our distracted world.
“In the digital age where information is at our fingertips, we’re constantly bombarded with countless ads that promise us the next big thing to chase after. They say; “Unlock the secret to”!, “Get ahead of the game”, “Change your life with this trick”, “get rich quick”, and a lot more., But, with so many options, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of shiny objects, losing sight of what truly matters.”
Remember the days when I couldn’t stick to one skill for long; from dabbling in Kali Linux, and photoshop to flitting between learning Python and countless other skills. My love for all things trendy and new was undeniable. I thought that could make me thrive and stay ahead of the game. But I was wrong; I was suffering from the disease of distraction known as Shiny Object Syndrome. Sound familiar? Well, you’re not alone
Shiny object syndrome (SOS) is the tendency for you to become easily distracted by new and trendy things, and lose focus on your goals or current projects. Usually holding you back from achieving mastery in one field.
Entrepreneurs are particularly vulnerable to this because they are naturally motivated and drawn to new technology and ideas. While this can be positive, SOS can cause entrepreneurs to constantly switch between projects and never fully commit to one.
Signs you have a Shiny Object Syndrome.
If you can relate to any of the following, chances are you have sos.
•You constantly start new goals but never see them through to the end.
• You jump from one course to another, drawn by the wild claims of each course.
• You have a collection of plugins and tools, but you don’t actually use them.
• You start projects with strong enthusiasm but lose interest after some time.
• You spend too much time on new ideas and fancy tools, rather than building the fundamentals.
How bad is shiny Object Syndrome?
You become a jack of all trades, but master of none. That’s because you don’t spend enough time to become good at one particular thing. You learn a bit of photography, try coding, hop from graphic design to affiliate marketing and start blogging too. In the long run, you may find yourself becoming less valuable to employers since no one wants to work with a “newbie”
Overcoming SOS;
SOS is a prevalent challenge that must be proactively addressed in order to achieve success in your profession.1. Set clear goals: Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve will help you stay focused and avoid getting sidetracked by shiny new opportunities.2. Prioritize: Make a list of the most important tasks or projects you need to complete and focus on them first. This will help you stay on track and avoid getting distracted by less important tasks.3. Eliminate distractions: Identify what distracts you the most and find ways to eliminate them. It can be unfollowing trendy accounts on social media, or Unsubscribing to that email list that keep on suggesting new ideas to you, 4. Learn to say no: Saying no to new opportunities can be hard, but it’s important to remember that you can’t do everything. Before diving in headfirst, take a step back and ask yourself if the new skill is truly relevant to your long-term goals or you are simply drawn to it because it’s currently the hot cake.
Closing thoughts?
Remember, it’s okay to explore new things but it’s crucial to learn to differentiate between shiny objects and real opportunities. Many ideas can appear promising at first glance but ultimately may not add value to your work or life. By taking the time to evaluate potential opportunities and determine if they align with your long-term goals, you can avoid getting caught up in distractions and focus on what truly matters.
