The Taliban have taken over Kabul and seized control of Afghanistan again, nearly two decades after they were ousted from power by a US-led invasion.
The Taliban’s imminent takeover triggered fear and panic in Kabul among residents fearful of the group’s hardline brand of Islam, with streets jammed with cars as many tried to flee. But all commercial flights were cancelled at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport on Monday, even as thousands of people crowded the terminal.
The US State Department said late Sunday that all personnel have been safely evacuated. France also announced the deployment of military reinforcements to facilitate the evacuation of its nationals, whose security is an “absolute priority”.
