
A group of sophisticated gunmen has been reported to have attacked several passengers on Monday dawn on the Akyem Anyinasin stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway during the late hours around 1am.
It has been revealed that the highway robbers made efforts in blocking the main road thereby robbing several vehicles at gunpoint.
Speaking to the assemblymember for Akyem Anyinasin, Mr Isaac Okyere made it known that he heard more than 150 sporadic gunshots.
Reports have it that, there was one vehicle whose driver managed to escape several gunshots as he refused to stop.
The Kibi Divisional Police Command has said that the driver in the person of Richard Boadu who was in charge of Kia Bus with registration Number GE 2397-10 arrived at Bunso Forest Gate snap checkpoint at about 1:30 am with some bullets holes in the windscreen.
The courageous driver after escaping with his passengers reported to the security operatives at the checkpoint the situation he had had to deal with and this forced the patrol team to attend to the situation.
The patrol team quickly moved to the scene and met a sprinter Mercedes Benz Bus with some of the passengers forced to lie face down on the road.
It has been made loud that while the patrol rescue were combing the area for the suspects, the armed robbers opened fire on the security personnel which they took cover and returned fire and had the Suhum Patrol team arriving at the scene to assist.
It has been told that the gunbattle occurred for several minutes but the suspects managed to escape through the bush.
Some of the passengers however sustained injuries and were evacuated to Osiem and Suhum Government hospitals for medical attention.
The acting Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sargeant Francis Gomado confirmed the incident later this morning to the media.
