Members of Parliament in charge of the nation’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) yesterday which is the 9th of September 2020 practically came in with an order demanding a thorough explanation into the very reason as to why Exim Bank reportedly paid a sum of ¢2 million to dancehall artiste Shatta Wale and others to act as brand ambassadors.
A top member of the committee in the person of Honourable Ras Mubarak said in a report that he didnt understand why such an amount would go to such individuals just based on their duty to promote goods made in Ghana.
The Honourable added that he has a very basic interest and it is that he is seeking clarity on this particular development because the ordinary Ghanaian had every right to know what the money was used for.
He went ahead to state categorically that he did not have a problem whatsoever with Shatta Wale being given a contract but was only interested in how the whole process was handled.
These very huge concerns by the Member of Parliament follows reports that the state-owned financial institution paid out a whooping GHC2m to Shatta Wale and Agya Koo who were to serve as brand ambassadors.
He said “I mentioned GHC2 million that went to Shatta Wale but the Deputy CEO says they wouldn’t know who the vendor selected and this is not to say that we have a problem with Shatta Wale getting some amount of money to do whatever work.”
The Deputy CEO with oversight of the Finance and Administration Division, Kwame Adu-Darkwa in a PAC meeting said the bank only engaged the services of a media consultant to support them in promoting their product since it was necessary at the time adding that he did not sign any cheque of GH¢2 million for any artiste.
Ras Mubarak on his stands also took time off to indicate that the money could have been invested in provision of water and other basic amenities for rural communities adding that Shata Wale compared to other artistes did not deserve the GH¢2 million that was paid to him. However the new development has it that, the Chairman of PAC in the person if James Klutse Avedzi has said that the Committee will invite officials of the bank to present details of the said payments to Shatta Wale and others.
More on this particular story as it unfolds.
