The very 54 countries africa can boast of have reported around 20,000 confirmed cases of corona virus infection and reports have it that this is just a part of the over two million cases that have been recorded globally.
Sad enough, the World Health Organization said on Thursday said that the African continent could see as much as 10 million cases in the next six months.
The U.N. Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) said on Friday as it called for a $100 billion safety net for Africa “The covid_19 pandemic will likely kill at least 300,000 Africans and risks pushing 29 million into extreme poverty.
UNECA report stated categorically that “To protect and build towards our shared prosperity at least $100 billion is needed to immediately resource a health and social safety net response,”.
UNECA as part of the revelations in its report is also backing a call by African finance ministers for an additional $100 billion in stimulus, which would include a halt to all external debt service as the agency modeled four scenarios based on the level of preventive measures introduced by African governments.
The agency made it clear that when these interventions are ignored, the possible infections Africa could experience will be close to 1.2 billion and 3.3 million would die this year. Africa has a total population of around 1.3 billion.
